I really like this scene, for many reasons. It is a rather telling, even though it is silent.
This scene makes it every obvious that Penelo and Fran are close. Penelo looks back to Fran as if to say “I know you know best, what should we do?” There is probably the silent exchange of “Are you alright, their is a lot of Mist.” “I’m fine, don’t worry.” When the camera swings back, Penelo turns to look at Ashe. To me it is a look laced with concern and yet there is also that knowing/trusting factor. You get to see again how much Penelo cares for everyone, which is her most admirable factor.
Ashe is solitary. She is looking ahead, focused and independent. She is curious of the wall that blocks them, they all are. But she doesn’t look to anyone for help. She doesn’t turn to Fran, who is the knowledge girl of the group. She strides on, because she knows that where they are going is all about her. She is leading this show. She is the one who needs the Nethicite.
It’s also nice to see the Ladies leading also. From the shots it obvious that they are standing ahead of the boys. We get a little bit of insight on them too in this scene.
Basch is obviously taking his subconscious step back from things. He is no longer a leader, more a silent and reliable guardian. You get this a lot in the game. Which is why he is normally spotted with Penelo or occasionally Fran at the back. He doesn’t like where they are heading. He is concerned. Yet if something came out of the mist, he would rush past and defend. That is his place, and he knows it. He is there to defend and protect, and he has to stay on this course, even if he doesn’t like it.
Balthier is oddly to the back also, not with Fran. Now normally before this part of the game, well before Archades he is well … the leading man. Normally at the front when danger is afoot. Where they are going scares him, and I think you can tell that from this seen. Everyone else is stumped with curiosity. They all have their little poses, yet Balthier’s seems indifferent. Like he doesn’t want to know.
Vaan stands in front of them, filled with curiosity. It’s exciting, it’s somewhere new and it looks dangerous. His naivety shows again, because where they are going is probably somewhere he should be scared of. Vaan seems rather blind to fear. He tackles everything head on. I don’t know if that is admirable or foolish but it shows he isn’t that much of a whinny kid the fandom make him out to be most of the time.
This is one of them ramble posts again that tries to show that FFXII has character development, you just need to know where to look.
